the technique for this is kind of hard to explain in words, but basically i did a color selection of only the darkest areas of the image, and made a new layer with that. it only grabbed the dark outlin-ish areas and left the rest transparent. then it was a matter of brushing and painting in the splatter and doing some blending colors.
